Drink water, stay healthy

Water is the healthy beverage option

The government should encourage greater consumption of all water – including natural bottled, filtered or straight from the tap – in order to improve the nation’s health and reduce future healthcare expenditure, argues The Natural Hydration Council.

Water is the healthy beverage option. The benefits are widely known and well accepted and, generally, water is the undisputed beverage of choice when it comes to healthy drinking.

In some walks of life, policies and practice of organisations is beginning to make a difference. A report on Drinking in Schools by the UK’s Expert Group on Hydration found that bottled water is now the drink of choice for those stocking vending machines in schools, with bottled water available more than any other beverage. And in many UK offices, the bottled water cooler brings chilled, fresh water right to the place of work, far from any kitchen or canteen.

The World Health Organization recommends that men, under average conditions, require 2.9 litres of fluid per day to remain hydrated, and women need 2.2 litres. Many common health issues are associated with dehydration.
